Unbroken Spring Planning

We need YOU!

Our Houston regional, Unbroken Spring, is entirely volunteer-driven and the event can’t happen without your help.

The people working on the event are organized into five departments, headed by Department Coordinators. Each department consists of multiple teams, each with their own focus and Team Lead.

The departments and teams are laid out in the chart and the departments are described in more detail below, along with the names and contact emails for the the Coordinators.

We’re looking for help in every department. If you have a lot of time, or just a little time, we have something for you to do.  If you can come early to the event, or late, or not at all, we still need your talents.

We’re also looking for donated materials… have a look at our wish list.

In the signup form below, you’re given an opportunity to pick a department (or several!) where you’d like to volunteer.

Come help make Unbroken Spring 2017 a success!

Departments

  1. Art – the Art Department is responsible for curating all the lovely sights and sounds at the event. It plans and builds the centerpiece effigy we’ll burn. It supports artists in bringing their art pieces to the event. It decorates public spaces and designs the marketing collateral for the event.  Orange Mike and Bex are the Art Coordinators and can be reached at ubs-art@houstonburners.org
  2. Business – the Business Department works to ensure the event stays out of trouble with the community and in the black financially. It handles ticket sales, gate staff, the event’s website, as well as the legal, accounting, finance, risk management and tax elements of the event.  Sharknado (Andy Brown) is the Business Coordinator.  Reach him at ubs-business@houstonburners.org
  3. Operations – the Operations Department keeps the event running smoothly. It handles event layout, theme camp placement, event setup and teardown, parking and equipment usage.  J-Rod and Ashes (Jered and Eddie) are Ops Coordinators.  Email them at ubs-ops@houstonburners.org
  4. Safety – the Safety Department works to pair trained participant volunteers with specific areas of concern related to mentoring, medical, and resourceful info. It also ensure that controls are in place for art we plan to burn.  Joyride and Mumbels (Dana and Forrest) are the Safety Coordinators. Their email is ubs-safety@houstonburners.org
  5. Volunteer – the Volunteer Department coordinates our most important resource — our volunteers! Key efforts include matching volunteers with event needs (i.e. you can help wherever), coordinating work weekends, scheduling staff shifts, Greeters and Hospitality. Megan Tol is Volunteer Coordinator.  Email her at ubs-volunteer@houstonburners.org

Start the volunteer process by filling out the signup form below. We’ll then be in contact to get you started.

  • For those interested in the Safety department, we also ask you to consider which Safety sub-departments interest you. A description of each is below. Please note that all Safety volunteer roles require additional training.

RANGERS: Rangers are members of our community who volunteer to gift their time and skills to facilitate the safety and foster the principles of the community. Modeled after the Black Rock Rangers of Burning Man, Rangers participate by helping fellow community members find solutions to their problems through non-confrontational mediation. Rangers are not cops. They are not your parents, and they are not trying to stop you from having fun! Rangers are the eyes and ears of the city, and they are typically the first responders to safety situations.

SANCTUARY: Sanctuary is a safe and private space for participants who are feeling psychologically overwhelmed and need a caring listener or low stimulus environment. Participants may come to Sanctuary on their own accord, or they may be referred for support after being medically cleared after a visit to uBETs. Rangers may also refer participants to Sanctuary if they feel they could benefit from support in a private, safe environment. Some Sanctuary volunteers are experienced mental health professionals (psychologists, counselors, social workers), but many are simply volunteers who care deeply about the individuals who make up our community and listen well.

MEDICAL: Also known as the Unbroken Emergency Team (uBET), these volunteers are licensed, certified, and/or trained medical personnel who provide 24 hour support for medical emergencies onsite. uBETs are first responders to emergency situations, and they facilitate transfer to higher level medical care as needed. Volunteers must have current CPR/First Aid certification.

GUARDIANS: Also know as the Perimeter team, these volunteers are responsible for securing the event boundary. Perimeter coordinates with Rangers, event leadership, and other safety teams to efficiently deal with any gatecrashers. Lost participants who may peregrinate beyond the event boundary will be kindly redirected towards the playa and camps. This team possesses expert knowledge of the event boundary and surrounding terrain so they may better protect the sanctity of our event site.

FIRE TEAM: Fire Team volunteers have been trained in fire safety and fire interaction procedures. This is the team that STOPS the fires, and on burn night, are some of the most important and necessary volunteers. Although previous firefighting experience is not necessary, volunteers should understand the principles of “burning” as it relates to setting afire the effigy, and they MUST be willing to stay focused and attentive during this portion of the event to ensure the safety of all participants.
