Our community loves art, and folks in the Houston burner community are always looking to organize art projects we can bring to burns in Texas and beyond. Each quarter we launch a call for proposals and a community panel selects one of these for an honorarium featuring key resources:
- Space in our Community Warehouse,
- A grant of $500 to support the project and its transportation
- As much free labor as you can muster from our community
Ideal projects will:
- Have roles available for skilled and unskilled artists
- Hold periodic work nights, such as during our Weekly Church Night
- Participate in Unbroken Spring, our Houston Regional Burn, in March
- Envision taking a developing project to Burning Flipside in May and a finished project to Burning Man in late August
Winter ’16 Honorarium: The Birmaid
Sponsoring Participants: Women Who Weld, a group of a dozen so burners and not-yet-burners, many of them women and some not, gender is not a condition of participation, sponsored by Kathleen Keahey and Evelyn Fasnacht.
Project Description: Built on an electrified rickshaw base, the Birmaid consists of triangular metal patinated “scales” which will be welded together to form the shape of a bird’s head and beak which transitions down the spine into the tail of a mermaid. The beak will house a propane flame poofer which will be an interactive element accessible to riders while mobile as well as to participants on the ground when the vehicle is stopped. The tail will hopefully (we haven’t figured out how yet) emit an eerie trail of smoke or steam–the idea is for a cloud of “mist” to trail behind the tail that will pick up the lighting as we travel. The whole body of the beast will be lined with translucent fabric to diffuse extensive lighting throughout the piece. At the sides of the body, over the passenger area of the rickshaw, retractable gossamer folding wings will expand to provide shade to passengers, as well as another canvas for lighting effects to play on and through.
The project will be a teaching project for Houston Burners who want to learn and practice welding on this as well as an ongoing basis. Once completed, the Birmaid be taken to multiple burns.
